The MegaFish Jimmy Story 🐟💙

Let's be real for a second.

I'm Jimmy Presnell. I'm 56 years old. I live in Jacksonville, Florida. I build things from my bedroom.

I built a dating app called MegaFish. It's free. It's private. It doesn't require an email to sign up. And there's no swiping.

This is the story of how it happened.

1. The Beginning — 5KB of RAM

In 1981, I got my first computer. A Commodore VIC-20. 5KB of RAM. No hard drive. No internet. Just a keyboard, a cassette player, and a lot of curiosity.

I taught myself to code by typing BASIC programs from magazines. I made little games. I made little mistakes. I learned.

That was the start of everything.

2. The Pause — Life Happens

I didn't become a "real" developer. I worked. I lived. I loved. I lost people I cared about. I met my partner Chuck. I adopted a cat named Sassy.

I didn't stop building — I just built different things. Relationships. A life. A home.

3. The Idea — MegaFish

In June 2026, I started building a dating app.

Why? Because the apps out there are broken. They're designed to keep you swiping, not connecting. They gamify human beings. They profit from your loneliness.

I wanted to build something different.

• ✅ Just real people looking for real connections

4. The Hack — Day 13

I built the first version of MegaFish on a cloud VPS. 13 days in, I got hacked. Someone found an SSH key I hadn't secured with fail2ban.

I had to tear it all down and start over.

That was a gut punch. But I didn't quit.

5. The Rebuild — Self-Hosted

I brought MegaFish home. No more cloud VPS. No more SSH keys. Just me, my 4GB laptop, and a Cloudflare tunnel.

I tried Node.js. I tried PHP. Neither felt right. Then I found Flask — a simple Python framework. It clicked.

I've been running it from my bedroom ever since.

6. The Blogs — 55 and Counting

I started writing blog posts. Not because I'm a writer — because I wanted people to find MegaFish.

I wrote about introverts, cat lovers, dog lovers, Paris, Sapelo Island, loneliness, first dates, birthdays, Kama Sutra, AI, Larry Flynt, Rupert Murdoch, and even refrigerator magnets.

55 blog posts in a little over a month.

And people found them. People are reading. People are finding MegaFish.

7. The Numbers — July 9, 2026

• 55 blog posts
• 60 pages indexed by Google
• 450+ visitors a day
• 31 countries reached
• 16 users (7 of them real)
• 68+ commits in Git

It's not Silicon Valley numbers. But it's real. It's mine. And it's growing.

8. The Philosophy

My grandaddy Presnell once told me:

"I walked into this bar where they had a band. I told the guy, 'Let them know I'm here.' He said, 'Who are you?' I said, 'Jim.' He said, 'HEY EVERYBODY, JIM IS HERE!' And the crowd went wild... and I didn't know anybody in there."

That's the Presnell way. Show up like you belong — because you do.

That's what MegaFish is. Showing up. Being present. Letting people know you're here.

9. The People

• Sassy — my cat, shut down MegaFish in 31 countries by laying on the power button
• Sonny — my friend, concert pianist for NYC Ballet, introduced me to Sapelo Island, passed away Sept 19, 2019
• Cornelia Walker Bailey — the griot of Sapelo, historian, Gullah Geechee cultural preservationist, passed away 2017

10. A Personal Note

I'm not a "real" developer. I'm a vibe coder. I work with AI. I trust my instincts. I show up every day.

And that's enough.

If I can build something from my bedroom, you can build whatever you're dreaming of.

You don't need VC funding. You don't need a team. You don't need a Silicon Valley address.

You need an idea, a tool, and the stubbornness to keep going when things break.

Final Thought: This Is Just the Beginning

MegaFish is growing. The blog is growing. The audience is growing.

And I'm just getting started.
